How to choose the right closet: A step-by-step guide

Writer: Sarah AmesSarah Ames

A functional closet is crucial for reducing stress and fostering a serene home environment. I recently installed the Bestar's Florence modular closet and I want to guide you in selecting the ideal closet for your area. We'll discuss crucial aspects like space planning, precise measurements, and detailed tips to simplify the process. You'll also discover essential rules and factors to consider, such as storage requirements, functionality, and style. By the end, you'll be equipped with everything needed to choose a closet that perfectly suits your space and lifestyle!

Access your space: Start by gaining a thorough understanding of your workspace. Begin with accurate measurements of your closet.

Step One: Measure each wall horizontally at three points (top, middle, bottom). Use the smallest measurement from each wall for optimal accuracy.

Step Two: Measure each wall vertically. Ensure you record every measurement for reference when designing your closet on the website.

Important factors to consider before creating your design: Ensure you account for the doors in your space, including moldings, as a closet unit cannot be placed there. Pay attention to the location of electrical outlets and light switches. If you want to add drawers, ensure there's enough space to fully extend the drawers in your design. Lastly, consider the direction in which your doors swing open, as this may affect the closet system.

Define your needs: With your measurements in hand, it's time to focus on the specific purpose of your closet system. Consider whether you have many shoes to store and whether your clothes will be hung or folded. The Florence closet system offers solutions for these needs, so understanding this before designing is crucial.

Design your closet system: With a clear understanding of your measurements and needs, you're ready to design your closet system. Bestar's closet systems are available in two standard widths and depths: widths of 25 or 36 inches and depths of 16 or 25 inches. Choose the option that best matches your measurements. Start by selecting your component towers. Component towers are the footprint for your entire design. Once these are selected you can choose your accessories. If you're planning to add drawers or doors to your design, now is the perfect time to choose your style. For a modern look, opt for the slab style, and for a traditional style, go with the shaker style. When adding door fronts, you can choose frosted glass for a more discrete appearance or clear glass for an open shelving look.

Lastly, my favorite feature- Bestar provides motion sensor LED lights. You can choose as many lights as you want, and they're incredibly easy to install because no wiring or tools are needed. Select your preferred type of lighting, whether warm, cool or neutral and adjust the brightness to suit your preferences. This beautifully transforms the atmosphere and perfectly illuminates your space.

Once you've installed your closet system—something I found straightforward by following the instructions—it's time for the exciting part: organizing! Visit my blog post to see how I expertly organized and styled my Florence closet system in my front hall closet.
