Organize your closet-like a designer

Writer: Sarah AmesSarah Ames

I recently upgraded our front hall closet with the Florence closet system by Bestar. The functionality it has brought to our space is tremendous. I'm excited to show you what I added to make the space both functional and aesthetically pleasing.

Before making any purchases for the closet, I ensured I knew exactly what I would be storing and the quantity of each item. Our two main categories were jackets and shoes. I wanted a dedicated hanging area for all our jackets, and it was crucial that my kids (aged 5 and 7) could independently use the closet. With that said I chose the double hanging tower so the adult jackets could go on top and the bottom rod was at the perfect height for my kids. I chose velvet hangers in sage green with a gold handle to enhance the color and aesthetic appeal, keeping in mind that even small details can significantly elevate the overall aesthetic.

Shoes were the next item to address. Although the Florence closet system by Bestar includes a shoe storage option, I chose not to use it due to the size of our closet. I needed to allocate space for our winter accessories and miscellaneous items, rather than dedicating an entire tower to shoes. However, if I were designing a larger closet, such as a walk-in, I would definitely incorporate a full tower just for shoes. Instead, I purchased separate shoe storage shelves that can be easily relocated whenever we need to update our storage needs and I added adhesive shelf liners to each shelf to protect the wood from dirt and moisture from the shoes.

Once my shoe storage was organized, I placed decorative baskets on the shelves. I selected plastic baskets with a fabric-like appearance to introduce additional texture. By mixing and matching these baskets throughout the shelves, I enhanced the textural effect. These baskets efficiently store items like hats, gloves, sunglasses, and other small essentials. To ensure accessibility for my kids, I positioned all their shoes and baskets on the lower shelves for easy reach.

Now, for my favorite feature. Bestar provides motion-sensor LED lights for your closet, combining aesthetic appeal with practicality. These lights automatically illuminate upon opening the door and offer three color settings—warm, cool, and neutral—with adjustable brightness levels. Remarkably, they require no tools for installation. Experience effortless setup with a magnetic adhesive strip that attaches in seconds, eliminating the need for tools, screws, or complex installation.

Designing a functional closet for our family has significantly reduced stress, especially during hectic school mornings. The Florence closet by Bestar enabled us to establish the ideal storage setup tailored to our family's needs, while also offering an elegantly designed look.
