Three important things to keep in mind when designing a dining space

In order to design a dining area that is both aesthetically pleasing and practical, we should consider three key elements: Aesthetic, size and functionality of the room.

Let's discuss style; above all, you must love the appearance of the furniture you choose. I'm a fan of a timeless look, yet I also enjoy mixing and matching pieces to add interest. Here, I'm combining the sterling dining table, which exudes a farmhouse vibe, with these classic Windsor back dining chairs.

If you prefer a traditional aesthetic, you can opt for dining chairs that match the dining table.

When mixing and matching your chairs, color is a crucial factor in your selection. Consider the overall color of your dining space. If it's lighter, add contrast with black chairs paired with a light table. This choice will introduce depth and dimension, ensuring the space doesn't appear flat and the furniture doesn't blend into the room. If the space feels clinical or lacks warmth, incorporate a wooden element by choosing either a wooden dining table or chairs to introduce an organic touch.

Let's focus on size. Selecting the right-sized furniture is crucial for achieving a harmonious aesthetic in any space. Oversized furniture will make a room feel smaller and cramped, compromising its functionality. Conversely, furniture that's too small creates a disjointed look, leaving the space feeling incomplete. Begin by choosing your dining table, as it is the largest item. An appropriately sized dining table should fit comfortably in the space, with 3 feet of clearance around it. This amount of space ensures easy movement and prevents overcrowding. For instance, if your dining area includes a sideboard, there must be at least 3 feet between the table and the sideboard.

Shape of the dining table. This is another crucial aspect to think about, and the decision depends mainly on the room's size and shape. Round tables are ideal for smaller spaces as they allow for easy movement around them, while a rectangular table shape suits a longer, narrower, or simply larger dining area. Furthermore, if you aim to maximize seating capacity, a rectangular table can provide more seating than a round table of comparable size.

Chair size. When choosing your chair size, determine how many people will regularly sit at the table. An appropriate sized chair will ensure 24 - 30 inches of space between each chair. Additionally, consider the height of your table and chairs; the ideal distance between the top of the chair seat and the table is 10-12 inches. This provides the perfect amount of space for comfortable movement.

When adding additional furniture, such as a sideboard, the first thing to think about is its size. If the sideboard will be near the table, ensure its depth allows for the necessary 3 feet of clearance. If placing it against a single wall, its width should be between 1/2 to 2/3 of the wall's size. When selecting its color, consider the color of the dining table and chairs. If you want a wooden sideboard or one with wooden accents, the wood's undertone should match that of the dining table or chairs. For instance, if your wooden dining table has a warm undertone (such as orange, yellow, or red), then the sideboard's wood color should have the same undertone. On the other hand, if you're choosing not to use wood accent furniture, think about coordinating the sideboard's color with either the chairs or the table. A black sideboard would pair well with black dining chairs.

These tips are crucial for designing a beautifully styled and well-proportioned dining area.
